Job Title:  Data Interpreter (URDU-PASHTU)

Program Background Summary:  

Pakistan Reading Project (PRP), funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), supports seven provincial and regional departments of education to improve reading skills for at least 1.3 million grades one and two children. Lead by International Rescue Committee (IRC), with Partners (Institute of Rural Management, Creative Associates International, World Learning), using a collaborative approach with three components for implementation, including: improving classroom learning environment, improving policies and systems, and providing community based support, over five years.

Job Overview/Summary:

A major part of the M&E dept. work involves conducting research and surveys to gather in-depth information about PRP progress in target areas. M&E is implementing cost variation research study in KP region. The qualitative part of the study was collected through conducting FGDs with teachers, students and SSA/RQAs. The data collected is in both URDU and Pashto languages. The services of a data interpreter is therefore needed to translate and transcribe the collected data in URDU language in Microsoft word format. The transcripts will then be shared with research team in TU to analyze and report study findings. The data interpreter provides support to MEL research team in following key tasks:

·         Transcribe and translate where needed, listen and read filled questionnaires notes and recordings of the FGDs conducted with students, teachers and SSA’s. After reading notes and while listening FGDs recording type it in Urdu using Microsoft Words.  

·         Validating data by comparing digital recordings with FGD notes to make sure that all records are consistent and aligned.

·         Work on revisions and corrections proposed and recommended by the assessment team.

·         Proof read final transcriptions to ensure accuracy.

·         Format files especially in MS Office and InPage.

·         Any other task assigned by the supervisor.

The scope of the work is mentioned in the following table. The person will listen from the FGD recordings and translate Pashto content and type in MS. Word in Urdu language with Alvi/ Nastaliq font.

Job Requirements:

·         Education: Bachelor degree (preferred) in any subject.

Work Experience

·         3-5 years of experience in transcribing qualitative data especially listening from digital recordings.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

·         Flexible, motivated, team player and fast to learn.

·         Proficient in using Ms. Word and In-page software.

Language Skills: 

·         Proficient in both URDU and Pashto Languages.
