Job Description:

Overview:

The Maternal Child Health Integrated Program (MCHIP) works on improving the quality of maternal IFA supplementation by improving supplies of IFA supplements and compliance with taking IFA by developing a better tracking and forecasting system and emergency reserves for supplements. The goal of the maternal, newborn and child health (MNCH) services component of USAID’s MCHIP Associate Award in Pakistan, currently in Year 3 of implementation, is to improve the landscape of service delivery for families in the rural Sindh Province by taking these services to scale, improving their quality, and bringing them closer to women’s homes. The project is being implemented by MCHIP led by Jhpiego in collaboration with Save the Children, PATH, and John Snow, Inc. (JSI).

Operations Research Overview

The operations research will comprise of two components: The first is a qualitative assessment of counselling on IFA (on acceptance, use, counselling on side effects) and IYCF at routine health contacts with women (ANC, delivery, PNC, and ENC) in the health care facility and at the community level. In addition, qualitative assessment is needed to understand the supply chain of IFA supplementation program – including forecasting, procurement and delivery. The second is a quantitative assessment of public and private health care facilities to understand the knowledge and practices of providers in selected health facilities and to assess the availability of resources for IFA and IYCF counselling, as well as IFA ordering, forecasting and delivery mechanisms. The recommendations from both components will be used to strengthen the implementation of MCHIP’s nutrition component.

The identified quality gaps and barriers in counseling, gaps and barriers identified by women for using optimal practices, and breaks in the supply chain for IFA will be used to make recommendations to improve the supervision, coaching and mentoring, group training, on-the job-training, and forecasting and ordering of IFA supplements. The information gathered will be used to develop tools that that will be used to improve IFA counseling for pregnant women; and reminder, recording compliance, as well as maternal diet and breastfeeding practices. This will be implemented by MCHIP/Jhpiego in subsequent duration of the project in MCHIP districts.

Specific Objectives of the Operations Research:

The key objective of the study is to assess and strengthen the content, quality, and effectiveness of IYCF counseling and anemia-IFA supplements programming, and specifically:

  1. Assess the supply side of the maternal IFA supplementation program – in terms of supply chain and logistics, including forecasting, procurement, and distribution at the national, health facility, and community levels

  2. Assess the demand side for nutrition – examining the content and quality of counseling on IFA (on acceptance, use, counseling on side effects), maternal diet and breastfeeding at routine health contacts with women (ANC, delivery, PNC, and ENC) in the health care facility and at the community level

  3. To develop key messages/content for the development of tools for counseling on IFA, maternal diet, and breastfeeding through SBAs and LHWs at facility and community level, respectively.

  • The duration of this assignment is for 10 working days.

Note: Only shortlisted candidate will be considering for an interview. The successful candidate selected for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation.
